Tijdens deze route maak je kennis met de Stelling van Amsterdam: een verdedigingslinie. Tussen 1881 en 1914 bouwde het Ministerie van Oorlog een kring van forten, batterijen, sluizen en land dat onder water gezet kon worden. Vrijwel het hele gebied van De Ronde Venen kon daarmee zo'n 30 centimeter onder water worden gezet om de vijand tegen te houden en de hoofdstad te beschermen. Het bouwwerk heeft uiteindelijk nooit dienst gedaan in oorlog en heeft sinds de jaren 60 geen militaire functie meer.
